Breast Reduction

Model with incision marks below her right breast

Hypertrophy of the breasts is a common cause of low self-esteem and shoulder discomfort or problems with personal hygiene. The enlarged breast is often ptotic, which means that the areola and nipple are too low.

Dr. Fouda Neel performs breast reduction surgery in Riyadh to reduce the volume and weight of the breasts and raise the nipple and areola to a natural and aesthetically pleasing position.

Breast reduction requires extensive undermining of skin to expose the breast tissue, leading to permanent scars. Sometimes, these scars extend around the areola, on the breast and sometimes even below the breast (anchor) or can sometimes be limited to the periareolar and vertical components.

Before the surgery

An ultrasound or a mammogram is sometimes prescribed before surgery. It is essential to discontinue smoking for six weeks prior to the surgery to minimize the risk of complication. Blood thinners and anti-inflammatories must be stopped ten days prior.

Type of anesthesia

Surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

The surgery

Surgical technique is adapted to each patient. At the end of the procedure, the patient will usually wear a supporting brassiere for a month.

After the surgery

Postoperative pain is moderate and is treated with minor painkillers. Bruising and swelling will be present for several weeks. Showering is allowed after one week. A supporting brassiere is worn for one month. Downtime from work varies between three and six weeks. Sporting activities, like running, should be interrupted for six weeks.

Results

It takes about six to twelve weeks to see the final results. The breasts will often appear uneven and too high at first and will then settle over time. Patients are usually very happy with the changes, in spite or the scars.

Imperfections

Scars are unpredictable and can stretch over time. Scar revisions may be considered one year after surgery.

Breasts will never match perfectly as nature is never symmetric. Sometimes secondary procedures can be contemplated to improve symmetry and appearance but not before at least twelve months of healing.

Complications

Surgery always carries a risk of complications and below is a list of the least uncommon ones.

  • Infection.
  • Hematoma and bleeding.
  • Necrosis of the skin or areola can happen. Smoking cessation is mandatory before the surgery to decrease the likelihood ok skin necrosis, leading to delayed healing and wider scars.
  • Decreased sensation is common for months and usually improves but not always to normal sensation in the scan, areola or nipple.
  • Wound breakdown, or delayed wound healing
    Wide scars or thick scars.
