What is a Brazilian butt lift?

A Brazilian butt lift, also called a gluteal augmentation, is a surgical procedure that enlarges and enhances the shape of the buttocks. While a traditional butt lift involves tightening the buttocks by surgically removing excess skin, this procedure enhances the buttocks using the patient’s own body fat, which is often taken from the waist and hips.

This type of butt lift gives you a firmer, more proportionate posterior while also improving your hip to waist ratio. In other words, it provides more of an hourglass figure.

Am I a candidate for a Brazilian butt lift?

Good candidates for a Brazilian butt lift share a few common characteristics:

  • In good health — You will need to disclose any medications you are taking so that Dr. Fouda Neel can determine if you need to be stop taking them before your surgery.
  • A non-smoker — If you currently smoke, you will need to quit at least 2 weeks prior to your procedure and remain smoke-free while your body heals.
  • Realistic expectations — It’s certainly reasonable to have high expectations with any cosmetic procedure, so long as you also understand the limits of what a Brazilian butt lift can do for you.

In addition to the general requirements listed above, candidates for Brazilian butt lift need to have areas of excess fat that can be harvested. Dr. Fouda Neel recommends that patients be about 20 to 30 pounds overweight.

Do I have enough fat?

Try the grab test at home:

  1. 1. Stand in front of a mirror unclothed.
  2. 2. Grab the flesh at your sides, stomach, and thighs.

If you can pinch a handful or more, you probably are the ideal weight for a Brazilian butt lift.

Are there alternatives to the Brazilian butt lift?

If you do not have enough excess fat, you will need to gain weight before you can have a Brazilian butt lift procedure. Alternatively, Dr. Fouda Neel can augment the buttocks using injections of the dermal filler Sculptra® or with silicone butt implants if you have insufficient fat. These implants are similar to what is used for breast augmentation.

How is a Brazilian butt lift performed?

This procedure is accomplished using autologous fat transfer, during which the patient’s own fat is carefully removed from certain parts of the body using liposuction. Special care is taken to ensure that as many fat cells as possible remain viable. The fat is then purified before being injected into the buttocks.

Where does the fat come from?

The fat that is used to enhance your buttock area during a gluteal augmentation generally comes from areas of your body where you have excess fat. A few common areas:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Flanks (also called the hips or love handles)
  • Arms
  • Back (upper or lower)

Dr. Fouda Neel can use fat removed from multiple areas of the body for your procedure. This offers the added benefit of slimming your body contours while enhancing the curves of your bottom.

What should I expect during recovery?

After a Brazilian butt lift, expect to experience swelling in treated areas — both the buttocks and the areas where liposuction was used. You will need to wear a special compression garment for approximately 2 weeks to control the swelling in the buttocks.

When will I see my results?

After a Brazilian butt lift, the results are final after the transferred fat has time to develop a new blood supply, which takes approximately 3 months. The fat that does not assimilate to its new location is absorbed by the body. In general, fat that remains after 3 months will survive, and at that point, the results of the surgery are permanent.

Can I combine my Brazilian butt lift with other procedures?

It’s important to be thoughtful when performing a Brazilian butt lift with another procedure. This is especially true of breast enhancement procedures. Brazilian butt lift requires patients to keep weight off of the buttocks for some time after surgery, lying on their stomachs or sides when they’re in bed. If a patient undergoes breast enhancement, which typically requires patients to keep weight off the breasts during recovery, it can be a precarious situation. Brazilian butt lift can make a nice complement to liposuction, but if you’re interested in a breast procedure, it’s best to undergo it at a later date.

How can I maintain my results?

The best thing you can do is maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep your weight steady. Gaining a significant amount of weight can affect the shape and definition of your buttocks. Losing a great deal of weight can cause your buttocks to become smaller, flatter, or saggy. Dr. Fouda Neel recommends that his  Riyadh Brazilian butt lift patients achieve a weight that’s easy to maintain prior to undergoing surgery. This doesn’t need to be your “ideal” weight (in fact, patients who are slightly overweight see the best results), merely a healthy one that’s comfortable for you to maintain.
